"You feel alright when you hear that music ring..."
When I was a kid I was slightly perplexed by my friend's homes that didn't have a piano. Didn't everyone have a piano in their home? Didn't everyone love music as much as my family did? I grew up in a musically talented home with parents who played instruments, sang and thoroughly enjoyed music of all kinds....from Led Zeppelin to Rachmaninoff and everything in between. It was built right into our core that naturally my brother and I would join in on the musical fun. I started taking piano lessons when I was in 3rd grade, learned to play the flute in the 5th grade and always signed up to sing in the choir. My brother followed suite by playing the trumpet and participating in band. He also happens to have a lovely singing voice and can find his way around a guitar. I don't ever remember him taking guitar lessons...but my Dad and his brothers all seemed to just know how to play instruments, lessons or no, so I guess in some way it makes sense that Daniel would just know how to play the guitar. Music has always been a family tie for us and no matter what's happening around us a little music always manages to make things better.
Robbie grew up with a deaf mother who has limited hearing capabilities by way of powerful hearing aids. Despite her disability, she too enjoyed listening to music and so Robbie and Billy grew up listening to the tunes of the day. When they spent time with their grandparents - which was often - they listened to the old country music of their time and with this exposure a love affair with music was born. As Robbie got older he started to buy music and learn about different artists. I remember when we were dating and Christmas rolled around he would look forward to the gift card he just knew he was going to get from his Aunt Kayna. It was always a gift card to the local music shop. He loves to attend concerts and has spent many late nights celebrating the gift of music with thousands of others. Today Robbie is the go-to-guy for new music selections. He's often heard of new artists and songs long before they are heard on the radio, if at all. A lot of this can be attributed to the permanent presence of technology in his life, but even before he knew he could love an Apple as much as he does he still managed to have an awesome and unique collection of tapes and CD's on the floorboard of his car.
The night Robbie proposed to me he chose to have one of my favorite love songs playing in the background. I remember him walking over to my CD player and choosing the Fleetwood Mac CD, choosing "Songbird" and then getting down on one knee and asking me the fateful question. A year later we were married and I am pretty sure it was the first time Mayridge Baptist Church had Fleetwood Mac playing over their sound system in the sanctuary.
Robbie and I both work well to music. I can clean a house in no time to an upbeat set of tunes and Robbie finds music helps spark him creatively. He listens to music when he mows the lawn, I listen to music when I want to wind down. It is part of the fiber of our being and in my mind there is nothing better than a moving arrangement of notes and melodies to stir the heart, mind, body and soul.
Jackson, I promise there will never be a shortage of songs playing in your life. It's a gift we will whole heartily share with you. Your Daddy would really love it if you're able to play instruments, something he's always wished he could do. Heck, I'd be happy if you can carry a tune, something I wish your Daddy could do. Ultimately, we just want to pass along to you our enthusiasm for a really great song. Oh, and don't worry, we're still working on getting a piano for the house.
