I've tried to call you names, but every time it comes out the same...

In a previous post I casually mentioned a couple of names for our baby boy or girl. I guess, for some, it's no big secret or a big deal for that matter...but for others it may be rather new, potentially, exciting information. Robbie and I have been pondering names for our children for nearly the entire 10 years of our marriage, so when it came to actually choosing names it kind of felt like the task had already been completed. Once I found out I was pregnant the task was more so one of finalizing the names we'd already picked out rather than choosing some out of a hat (or a book of 500,000).

A few weeks ago I had a hankering for some pot roast and fried pickles. Robbie took me to Mimi's, where both food genres were plausible choices, and while we ate we discussed names. Jackson Danger has been our final choice for quite some time thanks to Robbie's paternal Great-Grandma Decker (Jackson was her maiden name) and the Nelsons (mentioned Danger, chose not to use it for their sweet Maddox, Robbie fell in love - the rest is history) but upon a positive pregnancy test, Clementine was no longer Robbie's predominant girl name choice. I have been sold on this name for a few years and had come to the conclusion another girl name simply would not work for my female child - however - I completely respected his need to love this name as much as I did so, for dessert we headed over to Borders and checked out some baby name books. I grabbed A is for Atticus: Baby Names From Great Books and Robbie went directly towards 500,000 Baby Names, you know, because it had the most in it! After perusing through our respective books and sharing the ones we liked and definitely did not like, Robbie closed his book and said, "Well, Clementine Talley it is." (Talley is the maiden name of Robbie's maternal grandmother...aka Granny.)

Naming a child seems like such a major event and choosing the perfect name can take couples months of agonizing and second-guessing themselves before settling on The One. I can't really say I've agonized over this decision, but I have had a few moments of, "Oh dear, they don't like the name!" once it's been shared to people outside of my Robbie-Catie circle. Typically, I just shrug it off and declare my adoration for the names we've chosen. Besides, they just feel the like the right names to me and Robbie - I can't explain it any further than that. Can you imagine calling me anything other than Catie with a C-a-t-i-e? It's funny, I know, but that is exactly how I am feeling about the names we've chosen.

Now....I realize some of you may have, let's say, associations, with these names (i.e. the quarter horse trainers in the family have probably run into a few Clementines with four legs, right?) and my Mom hasn't wasted ANY time telling me how much she dislikes Danger (of all things to name a child!) but what I am realizing is as quickly as you meet this tiny little baby named Jackson or Clementine you will know as well as I do these are the perfect names for our precious child.

Now all we have to do is wait 7 more weeks to find out which one it will be!

Clementine is the French feminine form of Clement which comes from the Latin word clemens which means merciful or gentle. I think that is a beautiful meaning and a beautiful name for your little girl!
