Yes, it's a little harder than sewing a rectangle...

Yesterday evening I began sewing drapes for my living room window. Our living room only has one window and it also happens to be the sliding glass door that leads out to our deck. In other words - somewhat of a focal point in the room and one that gets a good deal of attention. Not that I was putting any pressure on myself and amateur sewing skills, oh no.

I bought the beautiful fabric and sketched out my plans. Robbie hung the curtain rod for me and I began the tedious task of measuring. I noted every detail in my Projects For the House Notebook (what, you don't have one of those?!) and as you can see from Exhibit A, my calculator and the little circled number at the bottom right corner of the notebook paper both said 93. As in inches. As in that's the length the fabric needed to be. So what did I do? I cut 85 inches. I cut the fabric into the length it was suppose to turn into after seam allowances. I had a mini melt-down, contemplated opening a bottle of wine, talked to a friend - who advised me that it might not be safe to drink and sew, recalculated my numbers and my options but this time with the help of Robbie.

Since my fascination with sewing has grown, so has my desire to hoard yards and yards of material I may or may not use. I figure, hey, someday it might be the perfect fabric for that one project that needed the perfect fabric. Well, low and behold, I had, in my basement art room, the perfect fabric for this, the jacked-up drape project.

Robbie and I debated and tried to find a solution that wouldn't look like a band aid on a stuck pig and why yes, those are polka dots! I regained my composure, ate a fudge bar and went back to work. I finished the first panel with a smile on my face and went to bed. After all, it was 10:30 pm for cryin' out loud.

I was up at eight and ready to tackle the rest. I sewed through lunch and honestly, could not be more pleased with my work. Here's me being pleased with my work...

And here is the final product!
Robbie congratulated me on my work and then said, "They're a little more girly than I was hoping - but you still did a great job."

Ah, my husband, the quintessential Retrosexual.

Catie, the drapes are BEAUTIFUL! Taylor and I want to make a bed skirt- can you give me some tips on WHERE THE HECK DO I START?!?!?

Oh yah, and I've already taken sewing machine lessons and made my first pillow about 2 months ago. I'm itching to get back into it!
