I know we chose this, but...
We are home sweet home from our long weekend in Oklahoma City. We left super duper early Friday morning and arrived in town around 1100 am...which tells you just how early we were up and at 'em. After some screen printing supply shopping in Edmond we headed out to Mom and Dad's and spent the day there. It was a beautiful day and their garden is in full swing. Dad grilled up a storm and I fried one of Mom's gigantic zucchini's. Yummy. The evening ended with Robbie and Dad watching an old movie and Mom and I visiting on the back porch. We always have something to talk about.
Saturday we were up early to help Robbie's Mom move. We spent the day loading and unloading, putting things away and organizing what felt like mountains of stuff. It was a productive day, but I was so tired by dinner time. Robbie and I treated ourselves to dinner at Ted's and oh-my-goodness was it delicious. I ran into an old friend from high school and for a moment it was like we had never left OKC. But, only for a moment.
After dinner we went to Billy and Kim's and had a nice visit. Lily was in the middle of her It's Time To Go To Bed routine, Robbie and Billy put together Billy's new grill and Kim and I visited while Lily had her bottle and fought heavy eye lids. Around 10:15 pm I was also fighting heavy eyelids and Robbie and I made the trek back to the Buddha Belly Farm (it's a more appropriate name for Mom and Dad's farm than you will ever know!).
Sunday we slept in as long as we thought we could let ourselves sleep, had coffee on the back porch with Mom and Dad and generally found reasons to be lazy and comfortable. We reheated grilled goodies for lunch and by 1:15 pm Robbie and I were out the door again. Off to Lily's first birthday party.
The party was great, the company was wonderful, the gifts were many and Lily was an absolute champ. By 5 pm or so though, it was time to head home. We pulled into our garage around 10:30 pm and I unpacked, said hello to the kitties and went to bed. Naturally, this morning came quick and naturally I felt completely unprepared to face the day.
Moving away from OKC was a choice based on a number of factors, but primarily it was a career decision. Robbie and I love living in Kansas City and we love our life here, but, after weekends like this I sometimes wonder why we chose to spread ourselves so thin. In three days we did two months worth of family activities.
We didn't really understand what life would truly be like when we moved 5 hours away. We didn't know we would start feeling more like guests to family instead of family to family. We didn't know everyday events would require time management and a watch the clock mentality. I don't think we completely understood how exhausting it would be to "go home again."
There's something to be said about not knowing everything, living the mystery. We had a lovely weekend with our families and right now my only wish is that we had the resources and the energy to visit every weekend. There's no resolution to the distance dilemma, only to make the time we spend in OKC enjoyable and productive - even if it means Monday morning comes a bit too early.
