Nesting...

Twig by twig, leaf by leaf and fuzz ball by fuzz ball this place is coming together. I don't work on Friday's and lately they have become a day for me to get laundry done, grocery shop, clean, nap, and usually in that order. I have been overhauling our cupboards and my cooking style and really trying hard to make better choices for our meals and snacks during the day. While at the grocery store last weekend Robbie asked me if I would buy some cauliflower and steam it for him. Apparently my husband - of nine and a half years loves steamed cauliflower with butter on top. Apparently Granny used to make it for him and he just loves it. I had a moment of, "Oh, poor Robbie! All these years and I have never fixed him steamed and buttered cauliflower all because I don't like it!" I had the moment and then remembered we rarely grocery shop without each other and he is and has always been a capable adult and probably could have made some steamed and buttered cauliflower for himself. I'm just saying.

Anyway, Robbie and I have been grilling a lot and last night I made Greek Chicken, Sugar Snap Peas and Steamed Cauliflower. It all looked so pretty I had to snap a picture. Now, the cauliflower is something I would never eat. Ever. I have a thing about certain textures with food. The thing is this: some textures I like, others I don't. Cauliflower happens to be in the Don't category. I recently came across the Kalyn's Kitchen blog and she shared the Surprise Mashed Potatoes South Beach Diet recipe. Basically it's steamed cauliflower mashed up with a little half and half and fake butter (i.e. I Can't Believe It's Not Butter). Honestly, I put so much butter in my trial portion size I couldn't really determine whether I liked it or not. However, with the actual plated portion (as seen above) I regained my senses and lightly buttered the mashed mess. I have to say: it wasn't bad. Okay, with that said, I also have to say: the texture thing was still there. Cauliflower is just kind of, hmmmm, maybe, gritty? Is that the word I am looking for? Anyway, I had a hard time getting past that...but really....I will absolutely feed this, instead of potatoes, to my kids, which will of course mean, more potatoes for me.

Oh Catie...! I am growing 3 of the most beautiful (hear Martha Stewarts voice?) cauliflower in my garden. 6 Broccoli. Yum! (Rachel Ray). I do understand the texture thing though. I will never eat fish! But cauli and broccoli are sooo good for you. Love, Mom
