The 2008 Do-Over...

Resolutions shmesolutions. I resolve to do nothing different in 2008...how's that for a resolution? I plan on eating what I want, ignoring my high cholesterol and expanding waist-line, and just for kicks I think I might forgo school all together...who needs it?!

So that's what Cynical Catie was thinking last night when the ever-so-cheesy news anchors asked each other what their resolutions were for 2008 on the 10 o'clock news. Like that's an appropriate place to discuss resolutions. I shrugged after their faux small talk and well, went to bed. It's another year, big deal.

And then I woke up...to a New Year and a dictionary. As usual, when I am pondering an idea, I grab my dictionary. I have to be certain that I understand the meaning(s) of the word. I am usually always pleasantly surprised to find a way to define the word in a new way, well, at least new for me. Resolution is no exception.

I think most people identify the new year and resolutions with the second definition (in green). That is as far as Cynical Catie got with her definition last night. 2008 Catie, however, dug a little deeper and found inspiration in definition # 4 (yeah, it's in red).

res·o·lu·tion [rez-uh-loo-shuhn] –noun
1.a formal expression of opinion or intention made, usually after voting, by a formal organization, a legislature, a club, or other group.
2.a resolve or determination: to make a firm resolution to do something.
3.the act of resolving or determining upon an action or course of action, method, procedure, etc.
4.the mental state or quality of being resolved or resolute; firmness of purpose.
5.the act or process of resolving or separating into constituent or elementary parts.
6.the resulting state.
7.Optics. the act, process, or capability of distinguishing between two separate but adjacent objects or sources of light or between two nearly equal wavelengths.
8.a solution, accommodation, or settling of a problem, controversy, etc.

Did I make it bold enough? Did you miss it? Go back if you did....don't miss it!

Firmness of purpose. I can't think of a better way to face a new year than to consider my purpose in this world: to love others as Christ loves me, to be a dedicated wife, daughter, sister, niece, grandchild, cousin, friend, to gracefully accept the challenges ahead, to value this life I have and honor God by caring for it, to finish goals previously set and make some new ones, to accept this new year as the gift it is.

I suppose I could provide a laundry list of things I really need to change about myself, but ultimately depression would ensue and I wouldn't get anything accomplished. No, I need the new year to remind me of who I am and why I've been given this life to live - even if these aren't the easiest answers to find. Being firm in my purpose isn't easy, nor should it be. But I imagine I will find it incredibly rewarding.

Happy New Year to you and may you resolve to find your purpose.

I'm working on it, in more ways than one! Thanks for opening our eyes to a new way of thinking of the word, "resolution."
