Master of the Crane...
A, not-s0-busy week here...hallelujah. Can't hardly believe it's the 20th...where did the year go?So, Monday I taught and since the kids are completely insane with excitement about a short week and the Christmas holiday break, I planned easy and fun projects. We talked about Sadako Sasaki, the little girl who survived the bombing of Hiroshima, but later died from leukemia, a common illness children suffered as a result of the bomb. She was told of the Japanese legend of paper crane making and so she set out to make 1000. The kids love this story and they especially love to make the cranes...but only with help...lots of help.
And this is where my story gets downright sad. I practiced only twice over the weekend and figured that would be enough. Robbie helped me maneuver my clumsy self through the visual and verbal instructions. I questioned arrows and folds but managed to make a crane. "This should be easy enough....I am sure I've got it."
The poor 4th graders (my first class of the day) tried and tried and I tried and tried right along with them. I was tempted to even call Robbie in the middle of class because we were all so frustrated. What were we doing wrong?!! My lack of planning and preparation was biting me in the butt and I had no where to hide - there I was with my butt hanging out getting bit all over the place. So...we made snowflakes with the origami paper instead.
When 5th grade rolled in I was nervous and had to actually admit to them that I DID NOT KNOW HOW TO DO IT. I was showing my cards to 5th graders! Not the brightest idea. By the grace of God one over-achieving student raised her hand (girl power!) and said, "Mrs. Knight, I can teach you!" I was so excited and so was the rest of the class. We gathered around our teacher and slowly worked our way through the process.
Five paper crane lessons later I had mastered the folding and was even able to see how each step worked with the next one and how some folds don't seem to have a purpose until the last few steps. I am learning so much.
