I have paint under my fingernails...

My painting class meets for 3 hours and 45 minutes twice a week. That's nearly 7 hours a week of IN CLASS painting. We usually have a painting due each week and a painting we work on in class for a few weeks. Needless to say, it's a lot of painting, paint, canvas, stretcher bars, gesso, matte medium....$$$.

My instructor earned his Masters at Parsons in New York (which is also featured in Project Runway.) He has an air of pretentiousness and loves to talk about himself and the people he knows. Fortunately, he is a great painter and really knows how to teach (which rarely go together in a university : )

The latest homework assignment was to modernize a Master painting. I chose an Expressionist painter, August Macke. I love the original - of which I can not find a link to - and decided to add a but of current culture whimsy.

So far, this is my favorite painting accomplishment. I just recently finished a self portrait and may or may not show it. Other people think the self portrait is great - but I find it slightly disturbing. One more thing: Thanks Dad for the great easel.....I've had it for years, but THIS year it has been a God send.

You did this?!? Wow. Was your instructor impressed? Is she listening to an I-Pod? When you and Daniel were little I was always sure that you were the brightest and best. Now, I am blown away! Love you, Mom

Catie, this painting is awesome. I looked up some of August Macke's other works and it looks like you have captured his color scheme quite well for this style of painting he did. I'd like to hear how the critique went.

Catie,

The painting is incredible. You have such a talent. I knew it long ago when I saw the "butt" picture. Please share the self portrait sometime. We would love to see more work from our favorite artist.
