Weekly Review...

So, this is the first "review," let me explain...I revisit my week, and chat about it.
(yeah, you probably could've figured that one out.)

In the Kansas City Star last weekend I read about Ron Mueck an Australian born, London-based artist who creates fiberglass resin sculptures that are lifelike and either really small, or really, really big...like gargantuan. He is a hyper-realistic artist who worked in special effects for movies like (one of my favs) Labyrinth. My friend Wis talked about Scott Fraser in one of her latest blogs and this artist made me think of Ron Mueck. Even if "art ain't your thang" check out the link to see his work. It's completely fascinating.

I really love that first week off from school for Summer Vacation...so freeing and the possibilities of your summer seem endless. Maybe this is really why I am in school to become a teacher! The sad thing is this summer is my last "free" summer. I have two official years left of school and the summer's between will unfortunately be filled with classes. So, I am going to take advantage of this one. Next weekend Camp or Die 2006, the week after - who knows!!

I am currently on a mission.....to lose weight. About 30 pounds, actually. This was the week where the stuff hit the fan and I was either going to sink or swim. So, I swam. I refuse to diet, or even refer to myself as "being on one" so this means I am in the process of a life-changing event. I have exercised everyday this week, eaten sensibly (except for the cake and ice cream last night for the Will & Grace finale - thanks again Laura!!!) and amidst all of that - I have maintained a healthy attitude - what, I think, is my biggest accomplishment - yeah me!

Robbie and I are friends with some great people who, this week, will officially adopt a newborn little girl. I got the call on Tuesday that she was born, but I haven't heard yet how everything has gone. I know she is healthy but I don't know when, or even if, she will be going home with my friends. They have not been able to have their own children and have wanted to start a family for quite some time. I am anxiously waiting to find out how the entire adoption procedure is going. I am praying for their emotional strength and for the birth mother who's heart may be breaking and struggling.

I saw an article on Ron Mueck in one of Brent's art mags several years ago. I'm so bad with names I didn't realize who he was until I saw the works. It would be awesome to go to an exhibit of his. This is the type of modern art I am drawn to. The details are phenominal, weaving hairs in one by one, wow! The figures are so life-like its haunting and their expressions say everything.
You know I realize L&J married in May but it didn't dawn on me it was their anniversery. Thanks for the reminder!

Settling in...

Next month marks our 8th Moved to Kansas City Anniversary. Eight years and I am just now feeling like we are settling in. Life is moving along at a steady clip. I have a love/hate relationship with Facebook, but thank goodness it exists or I would never know anything about anybody. I knew I was forgetting something...

Writing and keeping a journal has always been cathartic for me and I think often, "I should jot that down." The many " thats " that have gone by since last July are almost too numerous to count, and frankly, I've sadly forgotten most of them. I love to write and this blog is testament to that. Unfortunately, my time and energy is limited these days and given my OCD nature, I can't just write a simple little update without revision and editing. I've always wanted to be sure I am saying what I mean and mean what I say...and if I can do it eloquently with a little additional thought, well even better. And that's where I struggle these days. It seems my brain power is more focused on the miles of pages that need to be read for class, remembering to pick my child up from daycare and staying on top of a job that, at times, consumes more of my life than I'd rather admit. Gaining wait...

The heaviness of a few extra pounds compares little to the heaviness of grief. I'm feeling quite heavy these days and am impatiently waiting for a lighter spirit. The Daily Cancer Grind makes me weary and a little over a week ago Robbie's cousin lost her precious 4 month old daughter, Kate. Attending the funeral did little to ease the grief, but spending time with Kate's twin sister, her mommy, daddy and other caring relatives helped (a little) in redirecting the anger I was feeling. Am feeling. The grief in that home was palpable. It breathed, rattled the walls. We are losing patients, naturally...the holidays are approaching. I saw it in the funeral industry and the hospice industry and now the cancer care industry. People decline this time of the year. Not that the holidays are depressing enough. It's different this time though. I'm losing friends. Some of these women I see more than my best gal pals. I'm watching their decline and wishing on anything, everyt...
