It's official...I have keys to the building...
In case you didn't know, or haven't heard, or didn't care before, I am, officially, the new art teacher for Holy Name Catholic School. I spent the morning there meeting with the former art teacher and getting introduced to "my room." (aka: a sectioned off portion of the cafeteria :) I received keys to the building and my 4 supply closets, all filled to the brim with wonderful paper, paints, markers, pastels, and other yummy, messy art supplies. The former art teacher (who is also known as a Katie - but with a "K") is going to the Nelson Art Museum to teach, AND she gave me permission to hunt her down at anytime next year with questions. (*sigh* of relief)
The school is considered an inner city school, just about a 10 minute drive from where I live downtown. It serves a primarily Hispanic population and only has one class per each grade (K-8) all of whom I will be teaching next year! The school is very small, but the teachers who teach there do so because they want to. The kids I have met so far have been very sweet and excited about art. What more could I ask for?
I helped my friends Laura and Heather, both teachers at Holy Name, begin the end of the year cleaning process. Today was the last day of school and the collective enthusiasm of ending the day could be felt by all. I found some entertainment in watching the 3rd graders squirm when we informed them they would have to stay longer to help us clean. I actually had to tell one student that I was, indeed, joking. Hmmmmm, First thing on my teacher's agenda....learn how to effectively communicate sarcasm (which, by the way, was something I just learned last semester was very bad for a teacher to do :)
To say the very least, I am excited and nervous as heck about beginning my teaching career while also trying to complete my own education. I am just going to have to believe that the timing was right and that the job will be a huge blessing in my life.
